ScanX Digital Radiography System GivenDate: 11/01/2010 Feature-Rich Classic Model Named an "Editors' Choice"
MELVILLE, New York-November 1, 2010—Air Techniques, Inc., announced today that the Classic model from its ScanX digital radiography line received the maximum rating of "5 plus" by THE DENTAL ADVISOR. The highly regarded science-based publication gave the ScanX Classic device a 98% clinical rating and named it an "Editors' Choice."
Founded in 1984 and inspired by Consumer Reports, the mission of THE DENTAL ADVISOR is to provide the dental profession with evidence-based and clinically relevant information on dental restorative products, infection control products and dental equipment. The products it tests are sent to a randomly selected group of 20 to 30 of its 250 Clinical Consultants. Each Clinical Consultant and his or her staff integrate the product into their daily routine, use the product regularly over a given period of time and then complete a comprehensive survey.
The Classic is one of three ScanX digital radiography systems that utilize reusable phosphor storage plates (PSP) in place of film to produce diagnostic quality intraoral and extraoral digital radiographs. It allows computer storage, processing, retrieval and display of the digitized radiographic images utilizing the dental practice’s software and computer. The ScanX line incorporates an In-Line Erase feature that erases and prepares phosphor plates for reuse immediately after the plate is read by the system; no secondary erase function is needed.
Another highly efficient ScanX feature is Intelligent Track Control, which allows practices with multiple operatories to process multiple shots by two operators at the same time. Once the images are captured, they are directed to the proper patient records in the appropriate operatory for immediate review by the dentist with the patient. ScanX systems support the conversion of traditional panoramic and cephalometric x-ray machines to digital by replacing the film with a PSP of the same size. The ScanX Classic also accepts intraoral PSPs in sizes 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The equipment operates in normal room lighting, is wireless, and uses virtually the same workflow and placement technique as film.
The Clinical Consultants evaluating the ScanX Classic praised its image clarity, its superior image development speed, and the fact that no costly chemicals are required.
According to Riad Abuelafiya, Air Techniques VP sales and marketing, the federal government's National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) initiative will require all dental practices to store and share all patient data digitally starting January 1, 2014. "Practices that upgrade from film radiography to ScanX technology will be able to comply with this mandate," he said. "And as this evaluation by THE DENTAL ADVISOR clearly indicates, they will also benefit from the ScanX' system's many performance, productivity and profitability advantages relative to film."

Webinar on Early Caries Detection Now Available for Online CE CreditDate: 09/23/2010 Air Techniques, Inc., announced today that a webinar it recently sponsored on early caries detection
and caries control is now available for viewing online at any time. The webinar, which will earn viewers one continuing education (CE) credit, may be viewed at http://video.webcasts.com/events/penn001/35084/. The webinar begins with a review of traditional methodologies such as visual examination, probing and
radiographs. It then discusses innovative adjunctive devices utilizing laser and fluorescence technology that enable early detection of caries and subsequent intervention for caries prevention and control. It concludes with a question and answer session. One of the dentists who participated in the live webinar, Dr. Brad Adey of West Chester, Pennsylvania,
said, "I am very interested in incorporating technology into every aspect of my dental practice to ensure that I am practicing in the best interests of my patients. I have found that younger patients in particular have some advanced occlusal caries that go undetected on traditional visual exam, and I found the webinar to be an insightful source of information about new diagnostic tools that can improve my ability to detect decay at earlier stages." One adjunctive device highlighted in the webinar is Air Techniques’ Spectra caries detection aid. Using
fluorescence technology, the Spectra device emits high-energy LED light onto the tooth surface. The hygienist or dentist then views the tooth on a screen, which clearly displays both colors and numbers to precisely indicate the existence and extent of any decay, calculus or plaque. The Spectra device is the only one with this capability. By enabling hygienists and dentists to discover caries in early stages, the Spectra device can help prevent any
unnecessary excavation and allow dental practices to truly restore more teeth to health. Furthermore, the vivid, cutting edge color images provided by the Spectra device make a positive impression on patients and increase case acceptance rates. "I have been exposed to various technologies to detect caries and have trained other hygienists on these technologies,” said Constance Schuster, a Richfield, Wisconsin hygienist who participated in the live webinar. “However, the Spectra device has taken the best of other technologies and brought them together in one state-of-the-art caries detection device.I am very excited to have the opportunity to use this technology and share my knowledge with other dental professionals."
The webinar was conducted by Robert Fuchs, D.M.D. Dr. Fuchs, who practices in Louisville, Kentucky, is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. The live event attracted nearly 500 hygienists and dentists from 4 countries, 44 states and 4 provinces.
Air Techniques' Spectra Caries Detection Aid Wins Pride Institute's Technology AwardDate: 09/14/2010 Air Techniques’ Spectra Caries Detection Aid wins the Pride Institute’s Technology Award for Diagnostic “Best in Class.” The Pride Institute is today’s leading practice management research and consulting company within the dental field. Founded in 1947 by Dr. James R. Pride, the mission of this Institute is to empower dentists with business solutions that lead to new success in the dental community. Pride Institute’s distinguished team of technology experts voted Spectra Caries Detection Aid “Best in Class.”
Spectra Caries Detection Aid has been awarded several honors in this year alone. This particular award showcases Spectra as having clear advantages over other caries detection devices, and was voted “Best in Class” by a panel of key opinion leaders in the dental market. Spectra Caries Detection Aid is part of Air Techniques’ digital imaging product line. This handheld, non-invasive imaging product detects tooth decay by measuring increased light-induced fluorescence. The images are displayed right on your monitor – caries in red and healthy tooth enamel in green. Only Spectra provides numerical and color readings that precisely indicate the extent of the decay. Accurate tooth-by-tooth detection of fissure caries and caries on smooth surfaces makes it simple to uncover hard to detect cavities. Not only are you able to expose caries sooner, with Spectra you can verify during the restorative phase that all caries have been removed.
"Spectra’s seamless integration helps take the guessing game out of finding latent cariogenic problems within the tooth for patients of all ages. By simply harnessing a safe energy wavelength blue light, we are now able to observe things that had traditionally gone undetected in the past when examined under normal white-light conditions. Early detection at the on-set of problems and patient education through the use of this handheld imaging tool is the key to providing first rate dental care,” said Air Techniques’ Digital Imaging Product Specialist, Jon Newman.
Spectra Caries Detection Aid Captivates Hygienists at RDH Under One Roof Event Innovative Device Enables Dental Practices to Do More Restoration and Less ExcavationDate: 09/13/2010 MELVILLE, New York—September 13, 2010—Air Techniques, Inc., announced today that its Spectra Caries Detection Aid was very warmly received by the hygienists attending the recent RDH Under One Roof event in Orlando, Florida.
Using fluorescence technology, the Spectra device emits high-energy LED light onto the tooth surface. The hygienist then views the tooth on a screen, which clearly displays bothcolors and numbers to precisely indicate the existence and extent of any decay, calculus and plaque. At RDH Under One Roof, this innovative device was exposed to nearly 1,000 dental hygienists from around the country through a series of hands-on workshops. The workshops were conducted by Shirley Gutkowski, RDH, a well-known consultant, author and speaker on the topic of dental hygiene, and Jonathan Newman, a digital imaging specialist at Air Techniques. According to Mr. Newman, “When you have a new device that provides an unprecedented amount of insightful clinical data, there’s really no substitute for putting it in hygienists’ hands and letting them experience its benefits firsthand.” He added, “The hygienists at RDH Under One Roof particularly liked how intuitive the device is to use, and how it eliminates so much of the guesswork from their job.”
The Spectra device allows the hygienist to compare fluorescent images of the tooth before and after it has been polished with a remineralizing prophy paste. According to Ms. Gutkowski, “When the Spectra display documents that some degree of remineralization has occurred, the hygienist knows to continue the process by sending the patient home with a remineralizing toothpaste. When all is said and done, fewer teeth will have to undergo surgical procedures and require fillings.” While other caries detection devices are on the market, the Spectra device is the only one that provides both numerical and color readings to precisely indicate the extent of the enamel breakdown. It is also the only fluorescent device that can detect calculus and plaque as well as decay.
“It’s no secret that the notion of having one’s teeth drilled is a major source of patient anxiety, which leads many people to avoid visiting their dentist,” said Riad Abuelafiya, Air Techniques VP sales and marketing. “Spectra’s leading edge technology promises to not only ease that anxiety, but to enable dental professionals to truly restore teeth rather than engage in unnecessary excavation.” True restoration is Air Techniques’ goal. “Drilling a tooth and filling it with an amalgam filling is not a restorative procedure; it’s a prosthetic procedure,” said Ms. Gutkowski. “By reducing the frequency of ‘drilling and filling’ and increasing the emphasis on remineralization, Spectra technology can enable a dental practice to truly restore more teeth to health.”
